Harrier TAV-8S Matador
Kinetic

Started: Aug 2025

The Spanish Navy has operated Harrier variants for more than three decades, making the type one of the longest‑serving fixed‑wing assets in its naval aviation history. The first acquisition occurred in 1976, when six single‑seat Hawker Siddeley AV‑8S aircraft and two TAV‑8S two‑seat trainers were delivered, marking Spain’s entry into the world of V/STOL carrier aviation. A second batch of four additional AV‑8S airframes followed in 1980, expanding the fleet and strengthening the Navy’s ability to conduct shipborne strike and reconnaissance missions.

Although officially designated Matador, the aircraft quickly earned the informal nickname “Cobra”, inspired by the distinctive, oversized air intakes that gave the jet a predatory, almost reptilian appearance. Throughout their service life, all AV‑8S and TAV‑8S aircraft were assigned to 8 Squadron, based at Naval Air Station Rota. The unit operated alongside the rest of the Spanish Naval Aviation squadrons, supporting carrier operations, pilot training, and maritime strike capability during a period of significant modernization for the fleet.

The Matador fleet ultimately laid the foundation for Spain’s transition to more advanced Harrier variants, but the AV‑8S remains a notable chapter in the Navy’s aviation heritage — a unique blend of British engineering and Spanish naval doctrine that helped define the service’s fixed‑wing operations for decades.

This 1:48 scale release of Kinetic’s first‑generation two‑seat T‑Harrier arrived in 2017 as the third iteration of their original 2014 tooling. While Kinetic’s Harrier family has a somewhat mixed reputation among modellers, my experience with this particular boxing was entirely positive — the kit went together remarkably well with no significant issues.

For this build, I added an Eduard photo‑etch detail set, Aires Stencel ejection seats, a metal pitot, Armory resin wheels, and AztecModels decals (48‑016).
